newish here

So thanks for approving me a couple months back. Long time worshiper, first time poster. I'm a Canadian and recent Fine Arts grad and I do landscaping to supplement my documentary filmmaking habit. I am passionately keen on ecological issues. Hello to you all!

I want to ask if anyone else here is called to do channeling work and mediumship. This is something that came to me completely out of the blue and I'm a little lost as to how to proceed (although I'm lucky to be working under an experienced woman in California by e-mail). There seem to be some scholars here and I also want to ask; Is there a folkloric or cultural precedent for that sort of thing among prechristian Celts? Or is this some sort of shared syncretic hallucination?

I'm aware that this claim might be hard for some to swallow. Please believe that if it were at all possible for me to stop I probably would have by now. Maybe I am crazy, but I'm sure you've all experienced something a little out of the ordinary or you wouldn't be here.

ok Peace

I don't know if it has historical precedent in the Celtic world, but I do possession with deities myself. It is part of my religious witchcraft tradition and works for me. I invite the Morrigan through me generally at Samhain and sometimes at other occasions throughout the year. You should get yourself an in-person teacher if you want to do this stuff though. I'd be concerned about doing it with only email guidance from a teacher as it can be pretty intense and sometimes risky.

It's not that I want to. I'm unable *not* to. Believe me I've tried. I live in a small town and cannot find a teacher for various reason. I work with what I have.

Can I ask what that's like? How did you get started? Is it voluntary on your part? Are you part of a group that engages in this practice? Do you remember anything of what has transpired? How long have you been doing this?

I started doing possession work with the Morrigan because it was a practice in the Craft coven I was trained and initiated in. Every Samhain She was invited to possess one of us as a central part of the ritual. So eventually it became my turn and that's how I came to the practice. I'm no longer in that coven, but I have maintained the close relationship with Her and have continued to do possession and devotional work with Her. I guess I'd call it about 12 years I've been working with her, maybe with full possession starting only around 10 or 11 years ago.

It is and it isn't voluntary. I have some control over when She comes through, and for the most part it only happens when I (or someone else) calls Her. But also, you develop some keys to opening for possession, and when someone or something triggers one of those keys it can start to bring Her in, and so there are occasional times when it starts to happen involuntarily. I avoid that as much as I can, and will tend to remove myself from a context where I'm involuntarily being triggered into possession, because frankly I prefer not to share it with just anyone who may be around when that happens.

The other involuntary aspect of it is that once you have an intimate relationship with a deity that is ongoing over a number of years, the boundaries between you and them can start to blur a bit. I feel as though there is some part of my psyche which is permanently occupied by the Morrigan, and people have observed to me that my personality has shifted subtly over the years and reflects Her influence.

When I've done possession, I typically have some memory of what has happened but it is usually cloudy, or sort of vague, and often there are details missing. I will remember interactions that She had with others in the circle, but will remember them as She perceived them. I don't have complete blackouts. I'm present inside my own head as a sort of quiescent observer while She's possessing me. It feels a bit like a dream or like being on opiates, a sort of passive feeling while this other force is active and using my body and voice.
